WS19-12
Lyon & Healy
(Washburn) Un-designated model
5 String
Piccolo Banjo
S/N: 404 1880s 7 x 14 ½ 3 1/8 lb.
Fully original
Condition: Near mint.
Background: As banjo popularity soared in the 1880s, musical arrangements
were written in four parts and the piccolo banjo was made to play the soprano
parts. Rims are usually around 7" in diameter with necks to scale. All piccolos
are fairly rare but the 2 most frequently seen are those by Stewart (Phila.) and
by Lyon & Healy (Chicago). Although I have listed this as being serial number
404, it is possible that is a model number instead.
This instrument is considerably more elaborate than typical piccolos. Seven
frets are inlaid using 6 different shapes. The heel cap is inlaid. There are 2
decorative veneers beneath the peghead overlay, fingerboard, and the heel cap.
The tuners are carved bone.
About this instrument:
1) Ex-Bollman Collection.
2) The hooks fit into holes
in the top of the tension hoop.
3) Fancy carved bone tuners.
