WS13-3
Lombard Un-designated Model
(Fretless) 5 String
S/N: None
1850s 12 3/4 x 17 ˝
“ (Nut to Rim) 4 lb.
Condition: Near mint.
Fully original except 2 of the ebony tuners were professionally
copied.
Background: Very little is actually known. “C. E. Lombard” appears
on the metal plate on the peghead. It is not known if this was the maker or
owner. Jim Bollman has heard of a man by this same name who was supposedly a
St. Louis minstrel banjoist in the late 1800s. Whoever made this instrument was
an incredibly skilled luthier.
About this instrument:
1) Ex-Bollman Collection.
2) Fascinating and superb
details of construction including the curved neck insertion into the rim,
wooden dowel stick that houses a visible metal truss rod, and very unusual and
precise piecing together of the neck parts around the 5th peg.
3) Extremely attractive brass
shoes that are apparently bradded thru the rim.
4) Previously unseen ebony
tuners with carved floral design.
5) The large, inlaid
tailpiece is superb and apparently original.
