Haynes Bay State 5
String Piccolo Banjo
S/N: None 1880s 6 7/8 x 14 3/4 “ 3 1/8 lb.
Fully original
Condition: Near mint.
Background: As banjo popularity soared
in the 1880s, musical arrangements were written in four parts and the piccolo
banjo was made to play the soprano parts. Rims are usually around 7" in diameter
with necks to scale. Like those by most makers, Haynes piccolos are quite rare
and very few had tone rings.
The J. C. Haynes Co. of Boston made large numbers of banjos and other
instruments. Their basic grade piccolo banjo, #299, was priced at $15. This banjo is considerably more elaborate than
their catalog illustration for that model.
About this instrument:
1) Ex-Bollman Collection and
as such it is pictured in his section of the first Tsumura book (page 109,
upper left corner).
2) Lovely inlay design in the
peghead, which is quite elaborate for a piccolo banjo.
3) Ivory tuners and
tailpiece.
4) Ebony back strap that
extends to the 5th peg.
5) Attractive Haynes metal
neck brace.
