WS15-7
Fairbanks Senator 5
String
S/N: 3795
1893 10 ½ x 25 4 lb.
Original except the peghead
overlay has been re-finished.
Condition: Excellent.
Background: After his split
with Cole, in addition to un-designated models and continuing some he made with
Cole, Fairbanks soon introduced 4 new models lacking the Electric tone ring.
Features of this model:
Decorated much more attractively than the Special. The peghead and fingerboard
were of dyed woods. Rims were full spun. Pegheads were inlaid with a crescent
and star.
About this instrument:
1) Ex-Bollman Collection.
2) In addition to the S/N, the dowel stick is also stamped “93"
in large numerals. This has been seen on only one other banjo and no similar 2
digit numbers have been seen. The significance is not known.
3) The tuners are early metal shafts with black knobs with very big
bases.
Addendum: Features 2) and 3)
above also appear on my Special ( on this list just prior to this banjo).
Please refer to the addendum on that banjo for further details.
