Fairbanks                     Electric No. 2                                    5 String

S/N- 16353       1897                                    11 ˝ x 26 5/8"                5 1/4 lb.

Fully original.

Condition: Near mint.

Background: Based on surviving examples, the No. 2 is probably the rarest of the different Electric models. If so, it’s a shame as they have a simple elegance. While inlays on the lower models were more geometric in shape and “static”, from this model upwards they are predominately Art Nouveau in shape and “flowing” in style.

Features of this model: Necks are mahogany and the pots are full spun. Typical inlays include a star in the 5th fret and , quite unusual for Fairbanks banjos, an asymmetrically engraved inlay in the first fret. The peghead inlay design is a 4 piece floral motif slightly more simple than on the No. 3. The heel carving is not only quite attractive but, to this observer, preferable to the No. 3 carving. Tuners and tailpieces are commonly moderately elaborate carved ivory. As discussed earlier on this web site, in contrast to lower and higher models, the No. 2 (along with the No. 3) almost never has that number stamped on the dowel stick (reasons unknown).

About this instrument:

1) Ex-Bollman Collection.

2) The only known Electric No. 2 that is actually stamped “ No. 2".

3) Peghead and board inlays are all of very colorful pearl and the engraving is superb.

4) Asymmetrically engraved inlay in the first fret.

5) Elaborate hand carved ivory tuners and tailpiece.

6) Tension hoop has a raised inner surface and a lower outer one that hides the flesh hoop.
